When Coran Capshaw — founder of Charlottesville-based Red Light Management and longtime manager of Dave Matthews Band and other major acts — and Live Nation Entertainment decided to build a concert venue in Richmond, the city was ready. The Richmond Coliseum closed in early 2019, leaving a six-year gap during which many national acts routinely passed Richmond by in favor of Northern Virginia and Virginia Beach. Opened in June 2025, the roughly $30 million was built to fill that void.

Construction began in early 2024 on a 4-acre site along the downtown riverfront adjacent to the historic Tredegar Iron Works. The 7,500-capacity open-air venue — designed by Richmond firm 3North and built by Martin Horn and Conquest, Moncure & Dunn — is positioned to offer sightlines to both the James River and the downtown skyline. The setting informed every design decision: local architectural elements, riverfront character and the site’s historic industrial context were woven throughout the facility’s design language. Richmond Mayor Danny Avula called it “a pivotal investment in … Richmond’s economic and cultural landscape” at the opening ceremony.

The venue’s debut season saw 200,000-plus fans attend more than 30 shows between June and October 2025, including performances by Dave Matthews Band — whose two sold-out shows marked the band’s first Richmond appearances in 30 years — as well as Neil Young and Widespread Panic. More than half of all attendees came from outside the Richmond region, demonstrating the venue’s draw as a regional destination. Projected to support more than 300 jobs, the amphitheater is returning for an ambitious 2026 season that includes Sting, The Strokes, Bob Dylan, and Djo.
