Virginia Tech recently received a $75 million anonymous donation, the Blacksburg university’s largest commitment ever, according to a Thursday announcement.
A majority of the money will benefit Virginia Tech Athletics, although a “sizable portion” is being directed to the Honors College. Much of the athletic funds will support the university’s “Invest to Win” strategy, which aims to make Virginia Tech Athletics competitive in the current NCAA Division I and Football Bowl Subdivision. Invest to Win initiatives include elevating resources for student-athlete support, recruitment and retention.
There are also unrestricted funds to be used at the discretion of the university’s athletic director and additional support to be administered through the new Hokie Ventures nonprofit, which was created on June 2 to support Virginia Tech Athletics through investment and revenue generation.
“This historic commitment reflects extraordinary confidence in Virginia Tech’s rising potential in athletics and impactful scholarship,” Virginia Tech President Tim Sands said in a statement. “We are deeply grateful to receive this unprecedented investment at a pivotal moment for Virginia Tech as we work to elevate the success of our teams and student-athletes and develop innovative educational experiences that prepare our students to lead.”
The gift surpasses Virginia Tech’s previous record commitments of $50 million, including donations supporting the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC and the university’s Innovation Campus. The previous largest athletics-related commitment was a $20 million anonymous donation announced in December 2025.
“This extraordinary commitment is a powerful statement about where Virginia Tech Athletics is headed and what is possible when Hokie Nation comes together behind a shared vision,” Director of Athletics Whit Babcock said in a statement.
According to the university’s website, Virginia Tech Athletics supports more than 550 student-athletes competing in 22 sports in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The Honors College portion of the gift will support the Calhoun Honors Discovery Program, an interdisciplinary initiative launched in 2018 with a $20 million gift from alumnus David Calhoun that brings students together to address real-world challenges in collaboration with faculty, industry and nonprofit partners.
“We appreciate this investment tremendously,” Honors College Dean Becky Bott said in a statement. “We are embarking on the next phase of the Calhoun-inspired Honors Discovery, ensuring as many students as possible have access to immersive, collaborative experiences that prepare them to lead with creativity, empathy and impact.”
The university said details of the commitment, such as the years it spans and the split between Athletics and the Honors College, are still being finalized.
