BWX Technologies, a Lynchburg-based manufacturer of nuclear components and fuel, announced Thursday it won two U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program contracts totaling more than $1.4 billion.
The program is a joint organization between the U.S. Navy and Department of Energy that oversees the nuclear reactors powering the Navy’s submarines and aircraft carriers.
The first award, valued at $1.285 billion, covers long-lead material purchases for the program for fiscal 2026. It is the first of five annual task-order awards available through 2030.
The company said the second contract, valued at $165 million, covers the procurement of long-lead reactor system components and manufacturing work for Ford-class aircraft carriers. The work will be performed at BWXT facilities in Barberton, Ohio, and Mount Vernon, Indiana.
“We have no higher calling at BWXT than delivering these nuclear reactor systems for the men and women of the U.S. Navy,” Gary Camper, president for BWXT’s nuclear operations group, said in a statement. “Every component we deliver reflects a disciplined commitment to safety, integrity and precision, ensuring the Navy’s submarines and carriers can operate confidently around the world, protecting our nation with unmatched reliability.”
To date, BWXT has delivered more than 420 nuclear reactor cores to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and has received several major awards from the program over the past two years. In October 2025, the company announced a $174 million contract to manufacture naval nuclear reactor fuel. The program awarded BWXT approximately $2.6 billion in July earlier that year and $2.1 billion the preceding February for nuclear reactor component manufacturing and material procurement tied to Columbia- and Virginia-class submarines and Ford-class aircraft carriers.
In the past six months, BWXT also shipped four Ford-class steam generators from its Mount Vernon, Indiana, facility to Hampton Roads shipyards for the USS Doris Miller (CVN-81), the Navy’s newest Ford-class aircraft carrier.
A Fortune 1000 company, BWXT has approximately 10,000 employees and owns and operates 17 manufacturing facilities globally. It supports the U.S. and Canadian governments at more than 24 additional locations. It reported more than $3.19 billion in 2025 revenue, up 18% from 2024.
