The U.S. Space Force has awarded Arlington County-based Fortune 500 aerospace and defense contractor Boeing a contract worth up to $2 billion to produce two satellites for a military communications system.
Known as MUOS, the Mobile User Objective System is the Department of Defense’s narrowband military communications satellite network. The system allows troops, ships and aircraft to communicate securely around the world, even when they are too far apart to communicate directly by radio.
Under the contract, Boeing will design, develop and build the two satellites, as well as provide launch and on-orbit test support. The work will be performed in El Segundo, California, and is expected to be completed by Sept. 30, 2035.
The award follows an earlier phase of the MUOS service life extension program in 2024, when Boeing and Lockheed Martin each received contracts worth about $66 million to conduct risk reduction and preliminary design work ahead of the Phase II competition.
The latest award was competitively awarded, with two proposals submitted. Several news outlets reported that Boeing beat Lockheed Martin to win the Phase II competition, though the Space Force did not identify the losing bidder in its contract announcement.
Space Systems Command at Los Angeles Air Force Base is the contracting activity.
Boeing reported $89.5 billion in revenue in 2025 and employs more than 170,000 people worldwide.
