Oil slides as Middle East uncertainty keeps markets on edge

Summary:
  • crude falls 1% to $102.91 per barrel
  • Trump signals potential end to U.S.-Israeli war with
  • OPEC output drops 7.5 million barrels per day in March

LONDON, April 1 (Reuters) – Oil reversed earlier gains on Wednesday as uncertainty over the situation in the unnerved markets and U.S. President again suggested the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran could be nearing an end.

The front-month Brent contract for June fell $1.06, or 1%, to $102.91 per barrel at 1106 GMT, having dropped to a session low of $98.35. U.S. crude futures for May slipped $1.44, or 1.4%, to $99.94 per barrel, after falling to $96.50 earlier.

Prices rose earlier on Wednesday but then uncertainty over the Middle East conflict prompted investors to lock in gains.

fell after U.S. President Trump signalled a potential end to the war with Iran,” ING said in a report.

Oil supply disruptions from the Middle East will increase in April and will hit Europe as the closure of the hits exports further, International Agency head Fatih Birol said on Wednesday.

TRUMP SAYS CAN END THE CONFLICT WITHOUT A DEAL

Brent futures for June delivery settled down more than $3 on Tuesday following unconfirmed media reports that Iran’s president was ready to end the war.

Trump told reporters on Tuesday that the U.S. could end the military campaign within two to three weeks and that Iran does not have to make a deal to end the conflict, his clearest declaration yet that he wants to wind down the month-long war.

Still, analysts expect that energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz would be slow to return to levels before the conflict even if a were announced.

“Even if the Strait reopens, clearing the vessel backlog would take time, with production, exports and LNG flows normalising only gradually rather than immediately,” ING said.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Trump has indicated he could end the war before reopening the Strait of Hormuz, the route through which 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade flows.

“Even with diplomatic channels reportedly still active and intermittent comments from the U.S. administration predicting a short end to the conflict, the combination of limited tangible diplomatic progress, continued maritime attacks and explicit threats against energy assets keeps supply risks skewed to the upside,” LSEG analysts said in a note.

FALL IN OUTPUT FROM BIG PRODUCERS

Illustrating the impact of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, crude oil output from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries dropped by 7.5 million barrels per day in March compared with the previous month, as producers were forced to cut output because storage is full.

U.S. crude oil output also fell, dropping by the most in two years in January after a severe winter storm knocked production offline, data from the showed on Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia could raise its May official selling prices for crude to Asia to record levels, after Middle Eastern oil became the most expensive globally following the unprecedented supply disruptions caused by the Iran war, a Reuters survey of industry sources showed.

Dollar falls for second day as Middle East ceasefire expectations rise

Summary:
  • Dollar index down 0.3% to one-week low
  • Trump signals possible end to Iran conflict soon
  • falls below $100 per barrel

LONDON, April 1 (Reuters) – The dollar dropped for a second day on Wednesday as expectations of a in the conflict grew after the U.S. signalled that an end to the war could be near, even though markets remained on edge on fears of escalation.

The White House said U.S. President would address the nation “to provide an important update on Iran” at 9 p.m. EDT on Wednesday (0100 GMT on Thursday).

Trump said on Tuesday the U.S. could end its military campaign against Iran within two to three weeks, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News Washington could see the “finish line” in the Iran war.

Expectations that a ceasefire could be near have reversed some of the most popular trades since the war began in late February.

The yen recovered from this year’s low of 160.46 per dollar, moving back through the psychologically important 160 level that had fanned concerns about intervention by Japanese authorities. The hit its highest level in a week.

The dollar index, which measures the currency against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, was last down 0.3% at 99.456, slipping to a one-week low after a 0.65% fall on Tuesday.

“Markets are increasingly buying into the notion of de-escalation in the Middle East overall,” said Kirstine Kundby-Nielsen, FX analyst at Danske Bank.

“Markets are optimistic. We’re seeing some relief with rates going lower, equities going higher and the price action in euro-dollar reflects that quite well.”

The euro edged up 0.5% versus the dollar to $1.1603, after rising 0.8% on Tuesday.

The Japanese yen was up 0.1% at 158.46 per dollar. Sterling strengthened 0.7% to $1.3313.

At the same time, there were still signs of escalation in the conflict. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the next few days in the war against Iran would be decisive and warned Tehran that the conflict would intensify if it did not make a deal.

Meanwhile, attacks took place on multiple fronts on Wednesday, with drones hitting fuel tanks at Kuwait’s international airport and Qatar said an oil tanker was struck by an Iranian cruise missile in Qatari waters.

The U.S. dollar has benefited from a safe-haven bid since the conflict began in late February, and the U.S., a net exporter, is also relatively better positioned to handle oil disruptions than other nations.

crude futures fell below $100 per barrel on Wednesday, although they were last trading at about $102.70.

EYES ON JOBS

This week’s main U.S. economic focus will be Friday’s jobs report for March. It is expected to show that employers added 60,000 jobs during the month, according to the median estimate of economists polled by Reuters, following an unexpected loss of 92,000 jobs in February.

A sharp deterioration in the labour market would likely revive expectations for rate cuts from the this year, which have been largely priced out as rising from the Iran war stoked inflation concerns.

Markets were pricing in about 11 basis points of easing from the Fed this year, implying just under a 50% chance of a quarter-point rate cut in 2026.

For the yen, the Japanese currency was little changed after the ‘s quarterly Tankan survey showed business sentiment among large Japanese manufacturers improved in the three months to March, though firms expect conditions to worsen in the next three months.

The dollar should remain supported by the Fed’s cautious stance on rate cuts, while the yen is being underpinned by rising expectations of a Bank of Japan hike in April, said Sho Suzuki, market analyst at Matsui Securities.

“We may see a tug-of-war between dollar strength and yen strength, with USD/JPY trading sideways in the upper 150s,” he said.

The Australian dollar strengthened 0.7% to $0.6946. New Zealand’s kiwi strengthened 0.4% to $0.5770.

U.Va. Wise installs SMR control room simulator

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has acquired a nuclear control room simulator for (SMRs) to provide hands-on in the and clean fields.

Its NuScale Energy Exploration (E2) Center, one of two in Virginia, was installed in January at the university’s Oxbow Center in St. Paul. A $275,000 Virginia Clean Energy Innovation Bank grant funded the simulator.

“I’m just so excited about this,” says Chancellor Donna P. Henry. “Moving forward, clean energy is going to be so important, not only to the commonwealth, but to the country, and having U.Va. Wise play a role [in] helping to get a workforce stood up to support that is an important piece of where we’re headed.”
As of late February, the college expected to start instructor training in late March and student and community instruction in April.

The simulator replicates a NuScale Power SMR control room. Users assume the role of control room operator and apply nuclear science and engineering principles through simulated, real-world nuclear power plant operation scenarios.

George Mason University last spring installed in its Arlington County building a slightly larger NuScale E2 Center, which U.Va. Wise faculty and staff have visited. U.Va. Wise may incorporate its simulator in physics, computer science and software engineering classes and in seminars for the community, Henry says.

NuScale is a provider of proprietary advanced SMR nuclear technology. SMRs are smaller than traditional nuclear reactors, with a generation capacity of perhaps 300 megawatts compared to 1,000 megawatts in a larger reactor.

No large-scale SMRs are operating in the United States yet, but the federal government in March approved a construction permit for a startup, TerraPower, to build an SMR in Wyoming.

Virginia also are eyeing them as data centers drive up electricity demand. Southwest Virginia was initially considered a potential site for the state’s first SMR, but attention shifted to existing nuclear facilities. Dominion Energy, for example, is considering locating one at its Lake Anna nuclear power station.

Having a simulator at U.Va. Wise will give people seeking employment in the energy sector in Virginia or elsewhere “a leg up and help them go into the workforce,” Henry says. “We’re so close to Tennessee . . . so we might help them stand up a workforce.”

Appian-Pega lawsuit gets Fairfax retrial

Summary:

The Virginia Supreme Court has ordered a new in a $2 billion trade secrets lawsuit involving -based Appian, which sought to reinstate its 2022 jury award from Massachusetts-based Pegasystems.

In 2020, Appian sued competitor Pega and Youyong Zou, a consultant who allegedly acted as Pega’s “spy,” providing the company with copies of Appian’s software and documentation.

Pega disputed the claim, saying that anything it viewed via Zou was available to the public. A Fairfax County Circuit Court jury found in Appian’s favor and returned the record $2.04 billion verdict against Pega. However, a Virginia Court of Appeals panel reversed the decision in 2024, saying that Appian was improperly relieved of the burden of proving that Pega financially benefited from misappropriating Appian’s trade secrets.

Appian then sought relief by appealing to the Virginia Supreme Court, which took up its petition in March 2025 and in January backed the appeals court’s reversal.

Representing the bench, Justice Wesley G. Russell Jr. wrote that the circuit court erred “in concluding that the number of people with access to the claimed trade secrets was irrelevant,” and it also erred in giving an instruction that Pega, rather than Appian, was required to prove that “portions of its raw sales figures did not represent profits tied to the misappropriation” of Appian’s software. That was supposed to be Appian’s burden, both the appeals court and the Virginia Supreme Court found.

Although the Supreme Court’s ruling favors Pega by ordering a retrial, Russell did not go easy on the company.

His 43-page opinion noted that the company’s internal communications “characterized Zou as its Appian ‘spy,’” and said that Pega’s leaders “spent hours and hours removing [Zou’s] name from the videos” he prepared for the company, passing along tutorial videos he received from Appian. In early 2012, Zou, who was employed by government contractor Serco, “started moonlighting as a consultant for Pega,” according to the opinion.

Zou lost access to Appian’s server in 2014, Russell wrote, but “Pega continued to attempt to access Appian’s systems surreptitiously,” until Appian became aware of the issue in 2020, according to the opinion.

Now, the case will go back to Fairfax County Circuit Court, where a new judge will take it up, as the 2020 trial judge has since retired. An initial status conference for the retrial is scheduled for May 7.

McLean autism therapy startup continues expansion

A -based startup will use $45 million in new funding to continue its expansion plans across the U.S.

announced in January it secured $45 million in from , a division of First Citizens Bank, and Pinegrove Venture Partners. The funds come on the heels of a $51.5 million Series C round that closed in August 2025, as well as an October announcement that it signed a national agreement to provide services to Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield members, with a focus first on Virginia clients before expanding to other states.

Founded in 2020, Positive Development bills itself as the nation’s largest provider of for autism, as opposed to the more traditional applied behavior analysis approach, which can run up to $70,000 annually per child. Positive Development’s in-home, play-based intervention costs up to 50% less, the company says, and it developed a proprietary to improve care.

“We combine mental health, speech and occupational therapies and help families develop an integrated, tailored care plan for their child that is really focused on their unique strengths but also challenges to help them grow to their full developmental potential,” says co-founder and CEO Mike Suiters.
With increased awareness and better screening available, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported among 8-year-olds increased to 1 in 31 in 2022, up from 1 in 36 in 2020.

With about 950 employees, including about 120 in the Washington region, Positive Development offers treatment in Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., New Jersey, Oklahoma, Illinois, California and Florida. The company is prioritizing expansion around areas where it’s already operating and where it can get the most buy-in from private and state Medicaid plans, Suiters says. It expects to increase by “several hundred” employees in 2026.

“Our ambition as an organization is to eventually operate in all 50 states, accepting both private insurance and Medicaid insurance,” he says.
It’s difficult for health care companies to raise money right now, says Megan Scheffel, head of life sciences and health care at Silicon Valley Bank, which has worked with Positive Development for several years.

“I think between the equity and the debt raise,” she says, “it shows you that the company has some really good metrics and traction, both with clients and payers. It’s just showing you that something they’re doing is going very well.” ■
