N.C. company acquires Henrico’s Crossings Golf Club

North Carolina-based McConnell Golf announced Wednesday it has completed its acquisition of the 268-acre The Crossings Golf Club in Glen Allen.

Although it acquired the property from the Henrico Economic Development Authority for $0, the transaction is part of a plan to invest $10 million to redevelop and modernize the long-closed property into a public course capable of hosting major tournaments. While McConnell Golf will cover the bulk of the redevelopment costs, the Henrico EDA and the Henrico Sports & Entertainment Authority will provide about $2 million for clubhouse and golf facility upgrades.

McConnell said the redevelopment will preserve the character of architect Joe Lee’s original design while creating a course that appeals to players of all skill levels. The redesigned course will feature an 18-hole layout stretching approximately 7,400 yards, with improvements to playing conditions, infrastructure and clubhouse facilities to meet modern tournament standards. It will continue to offer multiple teeing grounds for recreational golfers.

“As a Virginia native, I’m excited to continue investing in my home state with The Crossings Golf Club,” McConnell Golf founder and CEO John McConnell said in a statement. “Joe Lee created a wonderful golf course, and we’re looking forward to bringing it back to life while preserving the character that made it special. Golf course architect Kris Spence has a great vision for the property, and I think golfers will enjoy the course as it was always meant to be played.”

The company expects to begin construction this summer, with irrigation installation scheduled for August, followed by earthmoving as permits are approved. The goal is to reopen the course in fall 2027.

The Henrico EDA purchased the golf course for $3 million in 2024 with plans to renovate the property. An initial redevelopment agreement with Powhatan-based Pros fell through after the company was unable to secure financing, prompting county officials to turn to McConnell Golf.

Henrico Sports and Entertainment Authority Executive Director Dennis Bickmeier said the EDA sold the property to McConnell at no cost as an incentive to attract private investment and generate long-term tourism and economic benefits. Under the agreement, the course will remain a daily-fee public facility, supporting high school golf teams, community groups and broader sports tourism efforts.

“The restoration of The Crossings will feature a robust par-72 layout with six teeing options to accommodate golfers of all skill levels,” Spence said in a statement. “Beyond the general area, players will also enjoy thoughtfully integrated native grasses, which add natural character while promoting biodiversity and reducing maintenance.”

According to McConnell, the revised course will feature TifEagle Bermudagrass greens, Tahoma 31 Bermudagrass tees and fairways, 419 Bermudagrass roughs, and native grass areas designed to enhance wildlife habitat and support pollinators.

McConnell also unveiled a new logo for The Crossings Golf Club, featuring a 1920s-era electric streetcar, which aims to be a tribute to Richmond’s history as “the birthplace of the world’s first successful electric streetcar system in 1988.” The logo was inspired by the historic Ashland Trolley Line, whose route once passed just a few miles from the course.

“We are thrilled to welcome McConnell Golf to Henrico County as they take on the renovation of this cherished local landmark,” Henrico County Board of Supervisors Chair Roscoe D. Cooper III said in a statement.

Founded in 2003, North Carolina-based McConnell Golf operates about 17 private golf clubs across Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.
