At TowneBank, Whelan helps recruit candidates with a desire to serve — a role that’s integral to the community bank’s success. Before pivoting to banking in 2021, Whelan spent almost a dozen years at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy as a teacher, head soccer coach and later dean of students. He serves on the boards of the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority and the Olde Towne Business Association in Portsmouth, along with other volunteer service in his community.
KEY TO MY SUCCESS: Listening. It sounds so simple, but I believe the key to my success is that I actually listen. When people feel heard, connected [and] listened to, it can unlock successful partnerships, help bridge connections and get the job done.
SOMETHING SURPRISING ABOUT ME: I absolutely butcher the lyrics to every song I know, even if I’ve heard it a hundred times, and I love nothing more than staying in on a Friday night with my wife, two dogs and a cat, watching the latest episode of “Survivor” or some other reality TV show.
