2026 Virginia C-Suite Awards: TERESA OWENS TYSON

Under Tyson’s leadership, St. Mary’s Health Wagon has expanded into a network of five stationary clinics and five mobile units serving rural Southwest Virginia.

A family nurse practitioner who joined the organization in 1998, Tyson now oversees a 44-employee team delivering medical, dental, vision, pharmacy, behavioral health and social services. She has directed the addition of a charitable pharmacy, a 10-chair dental clinic and one of Virginia’s most used rural telehealth programs.

Her leadership has contributed to several firsts in rural healthcare delivery, including the nation’s first FAA-approved drone delivery of prescription medications — now included in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum — as well as the world’s first tele-cystoscopy program and the launch of a rural cervical cancer prevention network using digital colposcopy screening and telecolposcopy.

She also founded the Move Mountains Medical Mission, a large free healthcare outreach event providing integrated medical, dental and specialty services to thousands of patients annually.

Tyson holds a doctorate from the University of Alabama and in 2017 received the Inspiring Global Nurse Award at the United Nations.
