VIRGINIA STATE PRESIDENT, BON SECOURS MERCY HEALTH, RICHMOND
As the inaugural Virginia state president for Bon Secours Mercy Health, one of the nation’s top 20 health systems, Lutes oversees roughly 14,000 employees across the Richmond and Hampton Roads markets.
An Appalachian State University and Medical University of South Carolina graduate, Lutes joined Bon Secours in 2022 as Richmond market president and was promoted to state president in 2025. Previously, he spent 15 years in leadership roles at Atrium Health in North Carolina.
Bon Secours has committed more than $550 million to hospital expansion projects in Virginia, including the opening of the $80 million Harbour View Medical Center in Suffolk, a planned $370 million renovation and expansion of St. Mary’s Hospital in Henrico County and a new medical office building and outpatient surgical center in Chesterfield County.
The health system has also opened its fifth freestanding emergency center in the Richmond market. Lutes has paired that capital investment with a deep commitment to community health, partnering with more than 50 nonprofits to address food insecurity, housing and other social drivers of health.
