Two elderly residents of the Canterbury Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in western Henrico County have died from COVID-19, the Virginia Health Department announced Tuesday afternoon, bringing the statewide total to nine fatalities.
Last week, the health department reported four positive cases at the long-term care facility; the two patients were among other residents receiving treatment for the virus at a local hospital, according to the news release.
Canterbury is working with the Henrico County Health Department to confirm cases of the virus and move affected patients to the hospital for care, as well as establishing a ward for residents showing symptoms. The health department is working to reduce risk of transmission and conduct contact investigations, the statement says.
The two fatal cases Tuesday are the first deaths in Central Virginia; so far, five people in the Peninsula District, one person in Fairfax County and one person in Virginia Beach have died from coronavirus-related causes.
