Clarke took leadership of WMATA in 2022 and since has been working to increase ridership and add fleets to the Metrorail and Metrobus.
The transportation system has previously faced challenges with its budget, due to ridership declining from the pandemic and construction costs rising during recent inflation. However, the authority said that Metro ridership has increased recently, and Metro this year was able to approve a $5 billion capital and operating budget for fiscal 2026, which the authority says will fund safe, frequent and reliable service without raising fares.
In June, WMATA implemented various Metrorail changes, including longer weekend hours and more service on the Red and Silver lines during peak times. It also in June began operation of the Better Bus Network — the first redesign of the entire Metrobus network in 50 years.
Former president and CEO of Austin, Texas’ Capital Metro system, Clarke holds degrees from Acadia University and the University of Southern Maine.
