The Motley Fool, a financial-services company, plans to invest $5 million to upgrade its Alexandria facilities and expand recruitment efforts.

The project will retain 282 jobs while creating 60 new positions, according to the governor’s office.

Founded in 1993, the company provides financial information to investors through its website, podcasts, books, newspaper column, radio show and premium investing services. The Motley Fool has offices in Australia, Canada, Germany, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe approved a $350,000 grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund to assist Alexandria with the project. The company is also eligible for up to $60,000 in funding and services to support employee training activities, which are provided through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.

Virginia competed with Washington, D.C., for the Motley Fool project.
