Charlottesville-based SaaS security platform provider SafeGuard Cyber has hired Thomas A. Dukes Jr. as its senior vice president for information security and corporate affairs, the company announced Tuesday.

Dukes has more than 25 years of experience in cyber policy. He has previously served as the U.S. State Department’s deputy coordinator for cyber issues, as a senior trial counsel in the U.S. Justice Department’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section and as an active duty U.S. Air Force judge advocate.

In his new role, he will manage data security and work with product and operations teams on quality and security standards. He will also continue his roles as a U.S. Air Force Reserve brigadier general and adjunct professor of cyber law and policy at the University of Virginia.

“In today’s digital workplace, using social media platforms and collaboration networks is a business imperative,” SafeGuard Cyber CEO and Co-Founder Jim Zuffoletti said in a statement. “We look forward to leveraging Tom’s expertise as our number of enterprise clients with truly global operations continues to grow.”

Dukes has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine at Farmington and a juris doctorate degree from U.Va. He is also a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Air War College. 

SafeGuard creates secure and compliant cloud-based platform for organizations to use social media and digital channels. The company was founded in 2014 and employs approximately 40 people.
