Raytheon, a subsidiary of Arlington County-based Fortune 500 aerospace and defense contractor RTX, was awarded two contract modifications worth $966.7 million last week by the Missile Defense Agency to support the development and sustainment of the Army Navy Transportable Radar Surveillance Control Model-2 (AN/TPY-2) radar system.
According to RTX, the AN/TPY-2 is an X-band missile defense radar capable of detecting, tracking and discriminating ballistic missiles, enabling it to distinguish real threats from non-threatening objects such as debris. The Missile Defense Agency, part of the Department of Defense, is responsible for developing and managing systems that defend the U.S. and its allies against ballistic missile threats.
The larger award was a $773.5 million modification to a previously awarded indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity radar development contract to provide research and development support for the AN/TPY-2. The modification raises the contract’s total ceiling value from $1.47 billion to nearly $2.25 billion and extends the ordering period from Oct. 30, 2027, to Oct. 31, 2030.
The second award was a $193.2 million contract modification to a task order to provide spares replenishment and continuation of AN/TPY-2 development support. Work is scheduled to run from March 27, 2026, through Oct. 31, 2030. The value of the task order increased from $145.93 million to $339.13 million.
RTX did not immediately respond to requests for comment seeking more information about the scope of work, how many AN/TPY-2 radar systems have been developed or delivered, or when the initial contracts were first issued.
RTX has more than 185,000 employees globally and reported more than $88.6 billion in 2025 sales. The contractor is the second highest-ranked Virginia-based company on the 2025 Fortune 500. RTX’s Raytheon business unit is also based in Arlington.
