In his nearly two decades as head of United Way of Southwest Virginia, Staton has continued to expand the organization’s reach and mission of creating a community impact model to improve the region’s health, education and financial stability.
In May, UWSWVA announced a merger with the United Way of the New River Valley. In addition, UWSWVA plans to convert a vacant 87,000-square-foot former Kmart in Abingdon into a regional workforce development hub, an estimated $23 million project that will house STEM labs for teacher training, a licensed early childhood care center, workforce development programs and a shared services alliance consolidating back office functions for child care providers.
“This is a critical moment for the United Way of Southwest Virginia and the communities we serve,” says Staton. The hub will expand access to affordable child care and further efforts to train and retain workers. In August, Abingdon received a $5 million state grant to aid the project.
A father of four, Staton’s goal is to ensure that future generations have the same opportunities he had growing up in Southwest Virginia.
