Matthews, N.C.-based grocer Harris Teeter announced Wednesday it is investing $95 million to establish its first Virginia distribution center in Caroline County. The project is expected to create 400 jobs.

Harris Teeter’s communication manager Danna Robinson says the company is thrilled to grow its business with the distribution center, which will span 1.5 million square feet.

“The location makes sense for our existing distribution structure, and we look forward to contributing to the county’s economic growth as well as job market as we move forward with this project,” she said in a statement.

The distribution center’s first phase will be at least 650,000 square feet.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe approved a $650,000 grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund to assist Caroline County with the project. The company will also be eligible to receive a Major Business Facility Job Tax Credit. The Virginia Jobs Investment Program will provide funding and services to support the company’s employee training.

Harris Teeter is a subsidiary of The Kroger Co. The company operates over 230 stores and three fuel centers in seven states and the District of Columbia. Harris Teeter employs approximately 28,000 workers.
