SENATOR, SENATE OF VIRGINIA, HANOVER COUNTY
SENATOR, SENATE OF VIRGINIA, HANOVER COUNTY
Virginia Business// August 30, 2023//
Following the retirement of veteran Republican Sen. Tommy Norment, McDougle could be the next majority or minority leader of the state Senate, depending on how party control swings after this fall’s election.
Chairman of the Virginia Senate Republican Caucus, McDougle is in the new guard of legislative leaders poised to take the place of retiring incumbents like Norment. McDougle was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2001 and the Senate in 2005.
The GOP has not had control of the state Senate since 2019, and the 40-seat body now is the only thing standing in the way of full Republican control over state government. McDougle and his party are working hard to win over at least one Senate seat this fall while keeping power in the House. His own race against challenger Pam Garner in the Eastern Shore and parts of Hanover and James City counties is close to a sure thing for McDougle, who hails from Mechanicsville. A graduate of James Madison University and William & Mary, McDougle is a former Hanover County prosecutor who is now in private law practice.
