Four Virginia companies make Fortune list of top employers

Four Virginia-based companies have been named to Fortune magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For.”

No. 56: Fairfax County-based Navy Federal Credit Union, which has 8,734 employees and has seen one-year job growth of 9.7 percent.

No. 74: Henrico County-based CarMax, with 16,455 employees and a job growth of 6 percent.

No. 87: McLean-based Capital One Financial Corp., 36,394 employees and job growth of 31 percent.

No. 85: Mars Inc., 11,985 employees, down 1.2 percent.

Navy Federal, the world’s largest credit union, moved up the list nearly 40 spots from No. 95 last year. The company hired 2,150 people last year. About 75 percent of the work force has a military affiliation. Navy Federal had revenue of $3.24 billion in 2011.

CarMax also moved up the list, from No. 91 last year. The company runs 117 no-haggle dealerships.  CarMax’s 2011 revenue was $10 billion.

Capital One rose 11 spots from No.  98 in 2012. The company offers up to $5,000 a year in tuition reimbursement plus job rotations, shadowing and mentoring. Its 2011 revenue totaled $16.3 billion.

Candy maker Mars is making its first appearance on the list. Employees in the company’s pet-food division can take their dogs to work. Its revenue in 2011 totaled $30 billion.

The top 10 companies on the Fortune list were: Google, SAS, CHG Healthcare Services, The Boston Consulting Group Inc., Wegmans Food Markets Inc., NetApp, Hilcorp Energy Co., Edward Jones, Ultimate Software and Camden Property Trust.
