PRESIDENT, GENERAL DYNAMICS INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, FALLS CHURCH
Virginia Business// August 30, 2023//
A former Navy surface warfare officer, Gilliland is responsible for leading an $8.5 billion IT company with 30,000 employees worldwide, 8,000 of whom work in Virginia. Gilliland joined parent company General Dynamics in 2005 and became president of GDIT in 2017.
In addition to overseeing numerous federal contracts — including a $1.8 billion contract in March to provide flight simulation training to the Army — Gilliland often takes leadership positions on issues in the federal IT sphere, including calling for the Pentagon and other customers to modernize and harden operating environments to meet the ever-evolving cyberthreat landscape.
She also started a mental health campaign at GDIT in 2021 after an employee’s suicide. The program — called “How are you, really?” — helps raise awareness and lower stigma around mental health. She declared 2023 “the year of the people manager” at GDIT to focus resources to assist the company’s human resources managers, who have faced more professional challenges since the pandemic.
Gilliland is vice chair for the Northern Virginia Technology Council and works with the Rett Syndrome Research Trust.
