Starting Thursday, owners of Tesla’s Model S electric car will be able to charge their vehicle for free at a station in Glen Allen.

The “supercharger” station is the first that California-based Tesla Motors has set up in Virginia.

Superchargers are located between city centers to allow Model S drivers to travel long distances. Drivers can travel for about three hours and charge their vehicle for as little as 20 to 30 minutes.

The station, located at 9860 Brook Rd., includes eight charging stalls that will be open 24 hours per day. According to B. Hayes Framme – a public relations representative for Tesla Motors – there are currently more than 160 Tesla vehicle owners in Virginia.

Tesla Motors recently was given the green light to open its own car dealership in Northern Virginia and currently has a showroom in Tysons Corner. Before it can operate as a car dealer, it must get a license from the Motor Vehicle Dealer Board.
