Fairfax-based engineering consulting firm Dewberry announced Friday it has won a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) task order to complete updated hydrography (maps of bodies of water) for the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) for approximately 9,880 square miles in northern Alaska.
An amount for the task order was not disclosed.
From 2010 to 2020, Dewberry mapped Alaska with advanced modeling including interferometric synthetic aperture radar (IFSAR) data and hydro-enforced digital terrain models (DTM). The new modeling created under the Geospatial and Services Contract 3 will triple the amount of NHD features, according to the company.
“The collaborative efforts of USGS, local stakeholders, and private companies such as Dewberry are paramount to making a project like this succeed,” Dewberry Associate Vice President Mark Safran said in a statement. “The updated hydrographic features of the NHD will be a benefit to all inhabitants as well as preserving the wilderness that Alaska is known for for generations to come.”
Founded in 1956, Dewberry offers engineering, geospatial, survey, mapping, environmental and construction services to government and commercial clients. The company employs a total of 2,000 people across more than 50 locations. Last year, it reported $470.8 million in revenue.
In late July, the company announced it would provide quality assurance services for the entire $3.8 billion Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) project — the largest construction project in Virginia and the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) history.
The Administrative Office of the United States Courts (AOUSC) awarded Arlington-based Accenture Federal Services (AFS) a five-year blanket purchase agreement to modernize the client case-management system of the U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services (PPS) system, the company announced Monday.
PPS works to carry out probation and pretrial service functions in U.S. district courts. Under the agreement, AFS will design, integrate, deploy and support a new cloud-based client case-management system on a software-as-a-service platform that would allow 9,000 PPS employees to work anywhere in the U.S.
“Accenture Federal Service is proud to transition PPS to a new user experience and technical functionality that will better support AOUSC as it provides mission-critical services to reduce recidivism and to protect our communities,” Jenna O’Steen, AFS managing director, who leads the company’s justice portfolio, said in a statement.
Using the new platform, AOUSC can incorporate robotic process automation, natural language processing and machine learning to automate repetitive tasks, according to AFS.
AFS is a subsidiary of Irish Fortune Global 500 company Accenture. AFS has clients within the national security, federal health, military and civilian services industries. Last year, Accenture reported more than $40 billion in revenue.

Shenandoah University announced Monday that it has entered into a partnership with the Washington Justice, a professional Overwatch League, for internships and learning opportunities for students.
This marks the first partnership between a university and a professional Overwatch League team (esports). The Washington Justice represents Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
The partnership will launch at the beginning of 2021 and end during the summer of 2022.
“This partnership will prepare our students to work in the esports industry with real world experiences and networking opportunities,” Shenadoah University Director of Esports Joey Gawrysiak said in a statement. “The Washington Justice and their incredible staff recognize the opportunities esports brings students beyond gaming and we couldn’t be more excited about what this partnership will bring to both Shenandoah University and the Justice. This is just another step we are taking to grow our esports program at SU and what sets us apart from other programs.”
Internships will focus on business operations, team operations, sponsorships and marketing. Washington Justice owner Mark Ein will provide leadership opportunities during the school year. The organization will also host live and online events for Shenandoah University students about event production, social media management and business development.
“Through this partnership, we aim to provide Shenandoah students with real, tangible industry experience, so they can be well-equipped for their first career following graduation,” Grant Paranjape, Washington Justice vice president of esports business, said in a statement. “We have had the unique privilege of interacting with many of Shenandoah’s students already, and by combining the excellent education they are receiving in the classroom with hands-on experience at a major esports franchise, we believe we can truly offer students the best in-class opportunity to equip themselves for a successful career in the esports industry.”

Virginia competed with Ohio for the project, and won because of its “history of successful launches, as well as access to additional talent around the region,” Nick Proctor, IAC Group manufacturing director said in a statement.
“As a major global player in the automotive sector, IAC Group’s growth in Shenandoah County serves as a testimonial to other industry leaders,” Secretary of Commerce and Trade Brian Ball said in a statement. “We are confident the region’s infrastructure and dedicated workforce will contribute to the operation’s future longevity.”
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) worked with Shenandoah County, the town of Strasburg and the Shenandoah Valley Partnership to secure the project for Virginia. VEDP will support IAC Group’s job creation through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program, which provides consultation and funding to companies creating jobs.
