Glatfelter joined the company as a project manager in 2014. As branch manager, he will oversee day-to-day operations, execute strategic business plans, drive utilization goals and maintain recruitment initiatives. He will also spearhead the diversification of the office’s project portfolio by exploring opportunities in the public and renewables sectors and focus on expanding the office’s regional reach.

“Brad’s promotion to branch manager is a testament to his outstanding contributions and demonstrated leadership,” Scott Delgado, executive vice president and regional manager at Bowman, said in a statement. “We have complete confidence in Brad’s strategic vision for our Fairfax office and in his ability to further elevate our standing in Northern Virginia.”

Bowman acquires Ga., Fla. engineering firms

Updated May 18

Reston-based engineering services firm Bowman Consulting Group Ltd. completed two acquisitions early this week, its 19th and 20th purchases since going public in May 2021.

The company announced Monday it had acquired Georgia-based Fisher Engineering Inc. and followed it with a Wednesday announcement it had acquired Florida-based civil engineering firm Hole Montes Inc.

Financial details of the transactions were not disclosed, but Bowman financed the deals with a combination of cash, seller notes and equity, according to news releases.

Founded in 2007, Fisher specializes in fire protection and life safety engineering. Its services include code consulting, systems design and life safety survey and analysis. Based near Atlanta in Johns Creek, Georgia, the firm also has offices in Arizona, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina and Virginia Beach.

“We’ve been pursuing the acquisition of Fisher for quite some time,” Bowman CEO Gary Bowman said in a statement. “Fisher has built a great platform from which we can expand a national and international fire protection and life safety practice. … Fisher’s experience as a prime contractor to the United States federal government will provide us a pathway to expand our reach to the single largest infrastructure consumer in our market.”

Fisher’s 24 employees will join Bowman.

“Bowman has a reach that will enable our business to grow at a rate we could not otherwise achieve,” Doug Fisher, Fisher’s co-founder and principal of fire engineering, said in a statement. “There’s a tremendous opportunity to leverage our collective experiences, customers and cultures to create something far bigger and more valuable than what we have today.”

Bowman expects the acquisition to contribute approximately $5 million in annual net service billing.

The second announced purchase, Hole Montes, offers infrastructure planning services, including survey, geographic information system (GIS) and construction management services. Founded in 1966, the company has an office in Naples, Florida, and Fort Myers, Florida.

“Hole Montes is a well-respected firm with a long-established presence in Southwest Florida,” Bowman CEO Gary Bowman said in a statement. “They possess expertise and client relationships that complement ours and will benefit from our national platform.”

Hole Montes’ 65 employees will join Bowman.

“Working with Bowman during the diligence and pre-integration period has given us tremendous comfort that this is the right next step for our leadership, our employees and our customers,” Hole Montes CEO Bob Mulhere said in a statement. ”We’re excited to accelerate our growth and to contribute our expertise to Bowman’s portfolio of services.”

Bowman expects the acquisition to initially contribute approximately $7 million in annual net service billing.

Bowman has more than 1,700 employees in more than 70 offices across the country and provides planning, engineering, geospatial, construction management, commissioning, environmental consulting, land procurement and other technical services. The company went public in May 2021 and has acquired several companies across the country as it continues to look for strategic growth opportunities. The company reported $261.7 million in 2022 revenue.

Bowman acquires Maryland engineering firm

Reston-based Bowman Consulting Group Ltd. has acquired Rockville, Maryland-based Richter & Associates, a dry utility infrastructure engineering firm, the company announced Tuesday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Richter has 28 employees. The company works with private and public clients as well as utilities to design, develop and implement natural gas, electric and telecommunications infrastructure. The firm was founded by CEO Steve Richter in 1989, according to his LinkedIn account. Richter, along with other senior managers of the company, will become part of the Bowman management team.

“Evolving complexity of end use, combined with increasing load demand, is forcing utilities to rethink their approach to system extension, capacity management, interconnectivity, and last-mile design,” Bowman CEO Gary Bowman said in a statement. “Steve has built a business uniquely positioned to address the need for integrated dry utility engineering inherent in all infrastructure projects. Every structure built requires coordinated orchestration of last-mile utility engineering and interconnection with multiple utility providers. Richter has built a solid foundation of experience and an impeccable reputation from which we can grow this service nationally.”

Bowman expects the Richter acquisition to contribute approximately $5.5 million of annualized net service billing.

“As development issues relating to electric, natural gas, telecommunications, alternative energies, streetlighting and traffic signaling became more complex, development costs escalated and frustration increased,” Richter said in a statement. “An opportunity presented itself for a firm to navigate and intercede with utilities and public agencies on behalf of infrastructure planners, developers  and owners. … We feel that this is the right time to join with a bigger firm to expand our reach and breadth of services and accelerate our growth.  We are excited to become part of Bowman and look forward to adding value to their national platform.”

Bowman has 1,700 employees in more than 70 offices across the country and provides planning, engineering, geospatial, construction management, commissioning, environmental consulting, land procurement and other technical services. The company went public in May 2021 and has acquired 17 companies across the country as it continues to look for strategic growth opportunities.

Bowman gives $5M to Va. Tech for land development program

Reston-based Bowman Consulting Group Ltd. founder and CEO Gary Bowman committed $5 million to Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering for the expansion of sustainable land development learning initiatives, the university announced Monday.

“The Bowman gift solidifies Virginia Tech as the premier undergraduate and graduate programs in the field of sustainable land development,” Mark Widdowson, head of the Charles E. Via Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, said in a statement. “In partnership with the land development industry and through the generosity of Gary Bowman, our department has set the standard for curriculum innovation and experiential learning that will enrich the education of civil engineering students for years and decades to come.”

The donation will establish the Bowman Sustainable Land Development Program, serving both undergraduate and graduate students. The sustainable land development master’s program, currently in its second year, will fall under the program, as will the Land Development Design Initiative (LDDI), which will be renamed but will continue to allow people and organizations in the industry to provide input on curriculum and to provide students with mentoring and experiential learning opportunities, like field trips and practitioner-led workshops.

Virginia Tech established LDDI in 2005.

“When I began to recruit students from Virginia Tech 25 years ago, most students were unaware of land development design as a potential career path,” Bowman said in a statement. “The establishment of LDDI resulted in a sea change in awareness among Virginia Tech students of land development design as a desirable career choice. Clearly the industry, and our company, has benefited from the influx of well-prepared young talent.”

Bowman graduated from Virginia Tech in 1980 with a degree in civil and environmental engineering. He was a principal at Urban Engineering for 15 years before founding engineering services firm Bowman Consulting Group in 1995. Started with five employees, the company now has 1,700 employees. It went public in May 2021.

Bowman serves on the College of Engineering Advisory Board and has served on the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department’s alumni board in the past. He is a member of the department’s Academy of Distinguished Alumni. Bowman also served on the LDDI’s leadership board in its early years.

“The program has withstood the test of time and has blossomed into a mature program educating a tremendous number of students,” Bowman said in a statement. “My hope is that this gift will be the beginning of a new level of support for the program that will ensure its long-term durability and provide resources to enable it to continue to grow and evolve.”
