Amazon.com plans to build a more than 1 million-square-foot distribution center in New Kent County near Exit 211 off Interstate 64, according to a Tuesday announcement from the county.
“New Kent County staff, the Economic Development Authority and the Board of Supervisors have worked diligently over the past several years to draw major players, such as AutoZone, Target and now Amazon, to our community,” New Kent County Board of Supervisors Chair Ron Stiers said in a statement.
Known as the New Kent City Center site, the property where Amazon plans to build is located next to AutoZone’s $18.5 million, 800,000-square-foot distribution center, which opened in November 2025.
Amazon purchased property for the distribution center from Maryland-based real estate firm Matan, according to a news release.
Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday regarding capital investment and job creation plans.
“This facility will bring good jobs with comprehensive benefits to the region, and we’re excited about the opportunity to grow alongside New Kent County,” Jonathan Greeley, head of economic development for Amazon in Virginia, said in a statement. “We look forward to sharing more details in the months ahead.”
In 2024, an entity sharing an address with Matan purchased about 171 acres near AutoZone from SPF Investments for about $15.1 million, according to county records.
On Sept. 8, 2025, the county Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to rezone about 282 acres located next to AutoZone and owned by Matan from economic district zoning to industrial zoning.
Amazon will begin construction on the facility this month and expects to complete the project in late 2027, according to New Kent County.
New Kent County did not provide economic development incentives to Amazon, according to a news release.
In March 2025, New Kent County officials announced that Target planned to build a 1.4 million-square-foot distribution facility at the New Kent City Center site.
Buc-ee’s, the Texas-based mega-travel center chain, also plans to build a location nearby. Following delays, it’s now expected to open in 2032.
