David J. Masterson will become president of Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk on Nov. 8, Sentara Healthcare announced Wednesday.

“I’m looking forward to being part of the community in Suffolk and Western Tidewater,” Masterson said in a statement. “It’s a fast-growing region and I want to help ensure that Sentara Obici Hospital and Sentara BelleHarbour continue providing quality care and lifelong relationships with our patients.”

Masterson has served as president of Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center (SWRMC) for eight years. Under his leadership, SWRMC has been one of the health care system’s highest-scoring hospitals in customer satisfaction, employee engagement and Sentara’s clinical performance improvement goals, according to the health system. During his tenure, the hospital received five-star ratings from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

“David brings a wealth of proven success as an inspirational leader and a champion of clinical quality,” Sentara Healthcare Regional President Terrie Edwards said in a statement. “He cares deeply about his teams and works to bring out the best in everyone, which benefits our patients every day.”

Before joining Sentara in 2013, Masterson held executive positions with health systems in North Carolina, Indiana, Georgia and South Carolina. Masterson is an American College of Healthcare Executives fellow and received the organization’s 2018 Regent’s Award for Virginia. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Old Dominion University and a master’s degree in health administration from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Amy Black, who has been serving as Sentara Obici’s interim president, will return to Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville.

Kapua Conley, president of Sentara CarePlex Hospital in Hampton and of the Sentara Peninsula region, will serve as interim president at SWRMC and lead the search to replace Masterson.
