In an email to members Thursday, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts announced it would reopen to the public July 4, and to members on July 1.
The Richmond museum closed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has remained shut since, except for its grounds, where many people gather in nice weather.
“As the situation develops, the museum will continue to follow recommendations provided by the commonwealth of Virginia, and we will remain dedicated to providing you with a safe visitor experience,” wrote the museum’s director and CEO, Alex Nyerges. Safeguards include social distancing markers, required face masks, clear partitions at visitors’ services and the museum shop, and frequent cleaning of the building and campus. Regular hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. will resume with reopening, as well as extended hours on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays until 9 p.m.
VMFA also will have timed tickets for its new exhibition, “Treasures of Ancient Egypt: Sunken Cities,” which opens July 1. Updates will be available at vmfa.museum.
