The governor’s office announced Tuesday a $3.15 million federal grant that will be used for the creation of an apprentice school at a collaborative research center in Prince George County.
The federal money “effectively unlocks” an additional $9.5 million appropriated by the commonwealth for the academy, according to a state news release.
The $12.65 million in state and federal funds will be used to build the CCAM Apprentice Academy on the same campus as Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing’s existing 62,000-square-foot facility in Prince George.
Formed in 2011, CCAM is a collaborative center involving researchers from Virginia universities and a variety of industries. The academy will be a subsidiary of CCAM.
State officials hope that the academy will develop a sustainable pipeline of skilled, factory-ready employees for Virginia’s advanced manufacturing industry.
Apprentice training will include areas such as mechatronics, machining and welding.
