The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Virginia grew 0.1 percentage point to 5.3 percent in May.
However, the labor force increased for the second consecutive month as more people reported looking for work and more people reported working. The May unemployment rate was 0.6 percentage point below the May 2012 rate of 5.9 percent.
The national seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in May was 7.6 percent.
The commonwealth’s unadjusted employment rate grew 0.6 percentage point to 5.6 percent. This was 0.2 percentage point below the May 2012 rate. The unadjusted rate typically increases in May as students graduate from college and begin looking for work.
