Virginia Tech moves up on research list

Virginia Tech ranks No. 38 in the nation in terms of higher education research expenditures.

The university has moved up two rungs in the National Science Foundation's (NSF) latest annual survey of top research institutions,  with $496 million in research and development activity for fiscal year 2013.

Tech’s expenditures for 2013 rose $42 million from 2012's total, $454 million, which had earned Virginia Tech the No. 40 position for that year.

The University of Virginia ranked second in the state on the latest NSF ranking at No. 59 with $385.8 million in expenditures.

Other Virginia schools on the list with at least $10 million in research expenditures include:

Virginia Commonwealth University, No. 103, $196 million.
Old Dominion University, No. 145, $99 million.
George Mason University, No. $95.9 million.
College of William & Mary and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science,  No. 187, $57.9 million.
Eastern Virginia Medical School, No. 205, $44.2 million.

The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore ranked first on the list with $2.17 billion in research expenditures.

In addition to it, the top 10 schools included the University of Michigan, University of Washington, University of Wisconsin, University of California-SanDiego, University of California-San Francisco, Harvard, Duke, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and UCLA.
