Virginia now has 10,600+ COVID-19 cases

Forty-seven days after COVID-19 was first found in Virginia, the state’s confirmed coronavirus cases have jumped over the 10,000 mark.

The Virginia Department of Health reported Thursday that the commonwealth has 10,627 confirmed COVID-19 cases and an additional 371 probable cases. The report represents an increase of 672 cases from the previous day, the largest single-day rise in confirmed cases in Virginia since the pandemic began.

Virginia has reported 372 coronavirus-related deaths and 1,743 Virginians have been hospitalized with confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Fairfax County alone has 2,362 cases, the most of any locality statewide. In other Northern Virginia localities, there are 1,027 reported cases in Prince William County, 686 in Arlington County, 498 in Loudoun County, 512 in Alexandria and 180 in Stafford County. In Central Virginia, there are 718 reported cases in Henrico County, 402 in Chesterfield County, 259 in Richmond and 99 in Hanover County. In Hampton Roads, there are 328 reported cases in Virginia Beach,  186 cases in Chesapeake, 149 in James City County, 136 in Norfolk, 105 in Newport News, 99 in Hampton, 136 in Suffolk and 98 in Portsmouth.

Forty-nine of the state’s COVID-19 deaths have occurred at Canterbury Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, a nursing home in Henrico County.

Statewide, 64,518 people have been tested for the coronavirus and there have been 168 outbreaks statewide, with 92 of those occurring in long-term care facilities and nursing homes, accounting for 988 cases and 78 deaths.

Globally, there are 2.64 million confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 184,643 deaths worldwide. The United States, which has the reported the most COVID-19 cases and deaths, had 842,624 confirmed cases as of April 23, and 46,785 deaths across the nation. Nearly 5,100 confirmed COVID-19 deaths have occurred in New York City alone.
