The number of COVID-19 cases in Virginia has jumped 15.8% in the past 24 hours to 3,333, according to the Virginia Department of Health’s Tuesday 9 a.m. update. On Monday, the department reported 2,878 cases.

The number of deaths is now 63, and 563 people are hospitalized with the virus in Tuesday’s data. The number of people tested is now 28,645.

On the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association’s COVID-19 dashboard, there are 1,183 people hospitalized across the state, including 589 who have tested positive for the virus and 594 whose tests are pending. VHHA updates the information daily at 9 a.m., and these statistics are current as of Tuesday.

The VHHA’s number of hospitalized, confirmed positive people is slightly different from VDH’s because the association’s data is based on figures supplied by hospitals and health systems in Virginia, and it does not filter out non-Virginia residents. VDH reports only Virginia residents with COVID-19 who were hospitalized when public health officials tested them, and does not include those who were hospitalized later.

Of the 1,183 total, 408 people are in ICU beds and 283 are on ventilators. Currently, 27% of Virginia hospitals’ ventilators are in use, both for COVID-19 cases and for other patients, according to 110 hospitals and 27 health systems that reported to VHHA.
