U.S. wireless carrier Verizon appears to be experiencing an outage, according to Down Detector.
As of 12:49 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 175,399 users had reported difficulties via the Down Detector website.
Many Verizon users also took to social media platforms, such as X, to say their phone service was completely down. Users are reporting phones saying “SOS,” “no service,” or “emergency calls only.”
Verizon said that it is aware of the issue and is working to solve the problem.
“We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers,” the carrier said in a statement on X. “Our engineers are engaged and are working to identify and solve the issue quickly. We understand how important reliable connectivity is and apologize for the inconvenience.”
Where are Verizon outages are reported
The outages appear to be happening nationwide, with the most reported locations including Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Tampa, St. Louis, Chicago, Minneapolis, Detroit, Washington, D.C., and New York City.
For some, Verizon’s own “Check network status” webpage displays a message that says “Something went wrong! Please try again.”
What is SOS mode on iPhone?
If you see “SOS” or “SOS only” in your iPhone’s status bar, your device is not connected to your carrier network, according to Apple. Your phone will attempt to route any emergency calls through other carrier networks, if available.
On some newer iPhones, you may also be able to call 911 via satellite if cellular networks are not available, Apple said.
