Helping build a future workforce

The nation’s largest pork processor has made a major donation to a high school in its backyard.

Earlier this year, Smithfield Foods announced a $3 million gift to Smithfield High School. The town (which has a population of 8,000) has been the company’s home since Smithfield Packing Co. opened there in 1936. Smithfield Foods today has annual revenue of $14 billion. Shuanghui International Holdings Ltd., a Chinese company, acquired it in 2013.

“We are looking to show the Isle of Wight and Smithfield communities that we are here to stay and that they are an important part of Smithfield Foods,” says Dennis Treacy, president of the Smithfield Foundation.

The money will be used to establish a new Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) field house, a multiuse pavilion and a “makerspace,” which will be used to teach students manufacturing and engineering skills.

Treacy says that the Smithfield High donation is the third-largest donation ever made by the company and the biggest it has ever given to a high school.

“Sometimes it’s easy to look away from the public schools, but our current CEO, Ken Sullivan, is very much a public-school fan,” Treacy says. He notes that, while grants to colleges are common, cash-strapped public schools often don’t get corporate donations.

The donation fulfills a $10 million capital campaign launched by Isle of Wight County Schools, which will benefit Smithfield and Windsor high schools.  In addition to the $3 million grant, the school district will take on a $7.9 million loan to develop vocational courses at the high schools.

The project is being initiated at a time when career and technical education is getting more emphasis in Virginia and elsewhere in the U.S. The commonwealth is working on an overhaul of its high school graduation requirements, which will apply to freshman students in 2018.

These requirements have not yet been finalized, but the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) must establish multiple paths for students to be ready for college or careers after high school. Those paths could include participation in internships, externships and credentials programs, a major component of CTE.

sle of Wight County Schools already is planning to allow students to spend more time in CTE classes. The school system eventually plans to implement a new schedule that would allow students to exclusively focus on CTE classes every other week.

“I think once we have our new schedule in place, that is going to put us, Smithfield High School and Windsor High School, ahead of the pack as far as really giving students in the area of Career and Technical Education time to do hands-on work,” says Jim Thornton, superintendent of Isle of Wight County Schools.

The new CTE center is expected to result in significant savings for Smithfield High School.  Currently, the school buses CTE students to the Pruden Center for Industry and Technology at a cost of about $950,000 annually.  The new career center will allow the school to teach CTE skills on campus, saving about $750,000 a year that it would have spent on transportation and fees.  Thornton says these savings will be used to pay down the $7.9 million loan over the course of 13 years.  With interest, the total amount to be repaid will be $9.3 million.

The new career center will be housed in a building behind the school, which will be retrofitted for the project.  Previously this building was used for carpentry and automotive classes.  Once the renovations are completed, the building will contain spaces for students to learn a wide variety of trades.  These will include culinary skills, cosmetology, welding and engineering.  Students also will be able to learn to design products in the makerspace using equipment, such as laser cutters and 3-D printers, says Casey Roberts, Smithfield High School’s principal.  The goal also is to make the makerspace available to the general public.

“We want to open up the makerspace in the evening, kind of like a Y membership, and have someone there to teach adults in the community how to use 3-D printers and laser cutters,” Thornton says.

Smithfield High currently has a makerspace that includes two classrooms, but the one being funded by the Smithfield Foods donation will be much larger and have more equipment.  The new space will be able to comfortably seat 30 people, Thornton says.

The multiuse pavilion will be a large freestanding meeting room, with a kitchen that can be used by culinary students or community members.  All three projects are scheduled to be completed within three years.

The Virginia Maritime Association held its 97th annual Maritime Banquet Reception and 14th annual International Trade Symposium May 10-12 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. The Virginia Chamber of Commerce unveiled the names of the Fantastic 50, the state’s fastest-growing privately owned small companies, at a banquet in late April.

Virginia Business Editor Robert Powell, Senior Editor Jessica Sabbath and Hampton Roads writer Elizabeth Cooper led a discussion on local issues with two dozen business and community leaders in early May at the Town Point Club in Norfolk.  The discussion was part of a series of events being held in advance of the magazine’s community profiles.

Eastman Chemical to expand in Henry County

Eastman Chemical Co., a producer of advanced materials and specialty additives, will invest $11.7 million to expand its manufacturing operation in Henry County.

The project is expected to create 15 additional jobs.

The company will add a new equipment line in its performance films business. The expansion will provide additional capacity to meet a growing market for paint protection and window film.

Eastman serves customers in more than 100 countries and had revenues of approximately $9 billion last year.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe approved a $50,000 grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund to assist the county with the project. The Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission approved $110,000 in Tobacco Region Opportunity Funds.

Eastman also is eligible to receive state benefits from the Virginia Enterprise Zone Program, administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.

Impact of Roanoke’s race continues to grow

The Roanoke region’s economy continues to benefit from an annual marathon that’s drawing more racers to the area.

The eighth annual race in April, known as “America’s Toughest Road Marathon,” hosted 1,859 runners who generated more than $613,000 in economic impact, according to an analysis by the Roanoke Regional Partnership and Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission.

Over the past eight years, the event has contributed more than $3.8 million to the local economy.


A post-race survey of the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon, double marathon, half marathon, relay, and associated events including the Carilion Family 1-Miler, and Anthem Star 10K, determined that the April 16 races created $349,005 in direct new sales activity, plus an additional $264,543 in indirect and induced spending for the total of $613,548 – up 3.6 percent from 2016.

The economic impact was larger this year as a result of an increased number of participants from outside the Roanoke region. They accounted for 54 percent of race participants. The race drew runners from 43 states and the District of Columbia and eight foreign countries: Albania, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Moldova, Mongolia, South Africa and the United Kingdom.


In the survey, people were asked to report the amount spent on fuel, meals, lodging, miscellaneous retail purchases and admissions while in Roanoke. According to the Roanoke Regional Partnership and Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission, about 48 percent of the participants took the survey. 


Some of the findings:

·         More than 44 percent of all respondents reported staying in town for at least one night.  About 38 percent stayed one to two nights. The average length of stay among overnight visitors was 1.7 nights.
·         About 46 percent of respondents reported traveling with family or friends, with an average of 1.1 additional people in the travel party among overnight visitors.

The race starts in downtown Roanoke and climbs to the top of Mill Mountain and Roanoke Mountain along sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway for a total elevation change of 7,430 feet.

Along with national interest, local participation continues to grow. The Anthem 10K race option, Carilion Family 1-Miler, post-race festival and concert in conjunction with the Down by Downtown Music Festival, brought the community to the city’s Elmwood Park. 


The 2018 races are scheduled for April 21. 


Construction to begin in August on state’s largest municipal utility solar farm

Construction on the Kentuck Solar project, Virginia’s largest municipal utility solar farm, will begin this August. The Kentuck project is a 6-megawatt solar array that will be part of the generation mix for Danville Municipal Utility.

When operational, the solar farm will generate enough electricity to power more than 900 homes. Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced the project’s timetable on Tuesday during a roundtable discussion with local officials and stakeholders as part of his Clean Energy Jobs Tour.

“The clean energy industry holds great potential for economic development in all parts of Virginia, especially areas like Southside that have struggled with job growth as core industries have declined,” McAuliffe said in a statement.  “…The city of Danville is taking the lead on this issue in Virginia, and I am hopeful other communities will follow its example and reap the economic and community benefits that come from increased use of renewable energy.”

According to the governor’s office, nearly 200 megawatts of solar have been installed in Virginia since 2014, and the number of solar jobs have increased 65 percent during the last year, making Virginia — a state that has lagged in solar — one of the fastest- growing solar job markets in the country.

Sol Systems and Turning Point Energy are the developers behind the Danville project. The estimated investment is more than $10 million. The farm is expected to power up to 1.5 percent of Danville Municipal Utility’s power needs once it’s operational by the end of 2017.  The array will be located near Dan River Middle, Kentuck Elementary and Dan River High schools in Pittsylvania County.    

“We look forward to this project providing energy and capacity to our electric customers for many years to come,” Jason Grey, Danville’s director of utilities, said in a statement.

George Ashton, president of Sol Systems, said the Kentuck project “is the first of many utility-scale solar project investments for us in Virginia, and we believe the local community and partners in Danville are a model of what can be accomplished by working together.”

Danville Utilities provides natural gas, water, wastewater and telecommunications services in the city and distributes electricity to about 42,000 customer locations in a 500-square-mile service territory covering Danville, the southern third of Pittsylvania County, and small portions of Henry and Halifax counties.
