Va. COVID-19 cases pass 42,000 on Friday

Virginia has 42,533 confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases statewide Friday, an increase of 1,132 cases since Thursday. There are 1,358 deaths related to the coronavirus, 20 more than Thursday, and the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association reports that 1,524 people with positive and pending test results are currently hospitalized in the state, while 5,648 have been discharged.

As the entire state is now in Phase One of Gov. Ralph Northam’s Forward Virginia reopening plan, the statewide positivity rate is 13.4% of all PCR tests given, continuing its gradual decline. Some health districts continue to see higher numbers — 25.2% in Richmond, 20% in Prince William County, 19.6% in Fairfax County and 19.2% in Loudoun County — but most are on the decline.

The city of Richmond has seen ups and downs but has been on a generally upward trend of positive tests — from 14.6% on April 29 to 25.5% on May 24, according to VDH data.

Testing is expanding statewide, with 39 CVS Pharmacy stores offering drive-thru testing for anyone who wants a COVID-19 test.

Globally, there are 5.84 million reported COVID-19 cases and 361,066 confirmed deaths as of May 29. In the United States, which has the most confirmed cases and deaths worldwide, there are 1.72 million confirmed cases and 101,621 deaths attributed to the coronavirus.
