Four decades ago, at age 16, Kuhn started the nation’s largest independently owned moving company out of his parents’ garage. Today, the company — named after his father, Jim Kuhn — employs more than 1,100 people, most of whom are based in Virginia, and posted $168 million in fiscal 2021 revenue.

In May, Kuhn relinquished responsibility for the company’s day-to-day operations, passing the company’s presidency onto David Cox, who was promoted from executive vice president of residential moving services.

JK Moving has also focused on data centers, with Kuhn partnering with a Dutch developer last year to purchase 270 acres in Loudoun and Prince William counties for data center development.

A passionate conservationist who has ordered 12 Tesla electric semi-trucks, Kuhn last year purchased a 42-acre Loudoun County village founded by formerly enslaved people to protect it from development. A 150-acre nonprofit community farm started by Kuhn in 2018 expects to donate more than 230,000 pounds of food to fight area hunger in 2022.

JK Moving was named Independent Mover of the Year for 2021 by the American Trucking Associations in March. Kuhn is also a trustee on the board of the Inova Health Foundation.
