The Marriott Marquis hotel project at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. will celebrate a key architectural event on Wednesday. The Washington Business Journal reports that Marriott International Inc., the developer of the $520 million convention center hotel under construction, received a permit Friday to install a tent at 901 Massachusetts Ave. NW for a topping-off ceremony, a three-hour event scheduled for Sept. 25.

The 1,175-room, convention center hotel is slated to open next spring. It’s expected to be key to the success of D.C.’s convention business, offering a 30,000-square-foot grand ballroom and more than 53,000 square feet of meeting rooms.
