Reston-based Transaction Network Services has acquired Toronto-based RoamEx, a telecommunications roaming services company.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

TNS provides data communications services for the telecommunications, payments and financial services industries.

TNS said RoamEx’s fraud prevention and mitigation platform will become a key element of the TNS roaming services portfolio, which enables wireless phone subscribers to travel outside of their home market and make phone calls, access the Internet and receive email.

TNS said RoamEx allows mobile operators to offer a wide range of roaming options with less risk by providing them with a suite of solutions for wireless fraud control.

“I am very excited about the acquisition of RoamEx and the additional opportunities it will create,” Surendra Saboo, CEO of TNS’ Telecom Services Division, said in statement. “We believe that with TNS’ strategy to develop innovative solutions and invest in the wireless and roaming markets, the RoamEx platform will become a key component of TNS’ roaming portfolio.  Our RoamEx platform will assist mobile operators through expanded service offerings, fraud elimination, and increased revenues.”

Established in 1993, RoamEx has been a pioneer in fraud detection and prevention services.  RoamEx detects and prevents wireless fraud by processing tens of billions of wireless usage data every month from carriers worldwide.

RoamEx helps mobile operators to detect and respond to fraud threats, enabling them to negotiate more favorable roaming agreements and offer restriction-free roaming to subscribers.
TNS provides network, database and other services to more than 1,100 telecommunications companies around the world.
