Virginians are privy to the fastest average broadband speed in the country, according to a study.
Communications firm Broadview Networks ranked average broadband speeds among all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
Virginia came in the fastest at 13.7 megabits per second (or 1.7 megabytes), followed by Delaware, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Washington, D.C. (Megabytes are used to meaure file size, while megabits are used to measure download speeds.)
Alaska had the slowest average broadband speed in the nation at 7 average megabits per second (or 0.875 megabytes).
Broadview used Akamai's “State of the Internet” report from June to create its map of average Internet speeds.
Of course, these are averages for the commonwealth. Virginia Business has covered the state's efforts to expand broadband to rural parts of the state.
