The Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) has awarded a six-year, $242.4 million IT contract to Unisys.

Under the contract, Blue Bell, Pa.-based Unisys will provide server, storage and data-center services.

VITA provides IT services to executive branch agencies and other government entities across the commonwealth. It is responsible for IT infrastructure, governance, procurement and security.

In a statement, Nelson Moe, chief information officer of the commonwealth, described the Unisys contract as “a significant step in VITA’s strategy to modernize the state’s information technology (IT) infrastructure.”

The state is moving from a single-supplier, Northrop Grumman, under a long-term contract to an arrangement with many suppliers under shorter contracts.

“The technology services VITA provides to agencies and other government entities across the commonwealth will be more agile, provided at market rates and offer the opportunity for enhancements,” Moe said.

In changing to a “multi-supplier” setup, VITA has awarded contracts for messaging, mainframe, multi-sourcing service integrator and managed security services.
