Richmond-based Sheltering Arms, which operates two rehabilitation hospitals, has named a new president and CEO.
Mary A. Zweifel’s appointment will become effective on Jan. 1. She joined the organization as chief operating officer in 2012 and has been interim president and CEO since last December.
Before joining Sheltering Arms, Zweifel was CEO of Penn State Hershey Rehabilitation Hospital in Pennsylvania. She has held both clinical and leadership positions at other rehabilitation organizations throughout her career and has served as a surveyor for the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities for nearly two decades.
Zweifel earned a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy and master’s degree degree from University of Kansas.
In her new position, she will oversee all operations throughout the Sheltering Arms continuum of care, including two hospitals (in Mechanicsville and Midlothian) totaling 68 beds, 11 outpatient centers and a variety of related health and wellness services.
She also currently serves as chair of the board of managers of a joint venture with VCU Health System and is expected to continue in that role. The joint venture is seeking regulatory approval for a new 114-bed rehabilitation hospital in the The Notch in West Creek Medical Park.
Her primary office is in the Sheltering Arms administrative office building on Eastshore Drive in Glen Allen
