Sandra J. “Sandy” Adams has been appointed commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services by Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

In her new role, she will be responsible for the agency’s efforts to promote economic growth and development of agriculture, provide consumer protection and encourage environmental stewardship.

Adams most recently served as the department's acting commissioner.  She succeeds former commissioner Matt Lohr, who resigned in late 2013. Before that, she was department's deputy commissioner for 3 1/2 years.

Prior to serving as deputy commissioner, Adams served for 10 years as the agency’s director of administrative and financial services and for three years as its financial director.
