The doors open at noon Thursday for the $100 million plus Salamander Resort & Spa in Middleburg. More than 10 years in the making, the 340-acre resort is the project of Sheila C. Johnson, a well-known business executive, entrepreneur and philanthropist who lives in Middleburg. Salamander is the first new resort to open in Virginia in years and among the few to open in the country this year.
Before the resort opens to the public at noon, Johnson will host a private inaugural ceremony and celebration. Welcoming remarks and a ribbon cutting will be held at 10 a.m. followed by champagne tours of the resort and lunch.
The 260,000-square-foot, 168-room resort includes an equestrian center with a 22-stall stable, miles of trails and a 23,000-square-foot spa.
