Kroger continues to shop for prime spots in the Richmond area for its supersize stores. The company will expand an existing store in Mechanicsville for its third Marketplace store. The store at Rutland Commons shopping center, where Kroger is the anchor tenant, will go from 74,000-square-feet to 115,000-square feet, according to a company spokesperson.
Work on the $10 million project could begin by this summer, with the expanded store expected to open in 2014. It will be similar to the 123,000-square-foot Kroger Marketplace that opened in December in the old Cloverleaf Mall site in Chesterfield County.
The company already has started clearning land on a second Kroger Marketplace at Staples Mill Marketplace in Henrico County.
