A reconstruction of the French frigate used by the Marquis de Lafayette to sail to the U.S. during the American Revolutionary War will visit three Virginia cities after an Atlantic crossing in 2015.
The frigate, L'Hermione, will leave Rochefort in mid-April 2015 and return to France in August.
Yorktown will be the first American landfall for the ship. The original frigate saw action in the decisive Battle of Yorktown, in which a British army under Gen. Charles Cornwallis surrendered, effectively ending the war.
Norfolk and Alexandria also were “provisionally announced” as destinations.
Other destinations include Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Greenport, N.Y,, and Nova Scotia.
At the age of 19, Lafayette sailed to the U.S. on L'Hermione in 1780, bringing news of French support and troops to aid the American cause.
The Friends of Hermione-Lafayette, the U.S. organization organizing the American welcome, will be chaired by former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
