Construction of an additional tower at Harbor’s Edge should begin soon.

The Norfolk luxury retirement community announced it is securing its final pre-sales for units in its $140 million River Tower and expects to meet its target this fall. Construction will begin soon after that and take about two years.

The first apartments are expected to be available in late 2020.

The community has selected Virginia Beach-based Clark Nexsen as the architectural design firm and W.M. Jordan Co. as the general contractor.

The restaurants and common areas of the new tower will be designed by JC Schaub, the architect behind restaurants at Hilton Norfolk The Main hotel and the renovated Cavalier Hotel.

Once the expansion is complete, the common areas of the existing building will undergo complete renovations.

“River Tower will truly be a hub for socialization, entertainment and relaxation,” Neil Volder, CEO and developer of Harbor’s Edge, said in a statement. “From a dining perspective, we’ve assembled an incredible team and our menu offerings are sure to compete with some of the finest restaurants in the Mid-Atlantic.”

“Harbor’s Edge was designed as a 275-unit project, but the expansion was delayed due to the economic downturn in 2008,” added Volder. “We’re now completing the original concept. The demand for upscale retirement living in our area continues to grow, so we want River Tower to have the best possible design and amenities.”
