The Port of Virginia announced Tuesday it handled a record number of cargo in its most recent fiscal year.

The port said it handled 2.76 million TEUs (a maritime measurement that equals 20-foot equivalent units), in the fiscal year ended June 30. That represents a 7.3 percent growth over last year.

The number of containers moved by rail was up 11.3 percent to 568,894, and the total truck containers grew 4.6 percent to 950,311, an increase of 4.6 percent.

Traffic at the Richmond Marine Terminal also grew. The terminal on the James River handled 22,500 barge containers, up 37.6 percent.

The port announced that it also handled 231,675 TEUs in June, a 7 percent increase over June 2016.

“We finished fiscal year 2017 with a solid volume increase and thus marked our fourth consecutive fiscal year of volume growth,” Port of Virginia CEO and Executive Director John Reinhart said in a statement.
