The PJM Interconnection, based in Valley Forge, Pa., plans $1.2 billion in upgrades and improvements to its high-voltage electric transmission system, which serves the District of Columbia and 13 states including Virginia.
The upgrades and improvements were identified as part of PJM's continuous regional planning process.
With these changes, the PJM regional transmission plan includes more than $24.2 billion in transmission additions and upgrades since 2000.
PJM serves a region of 61 million people that ranges from the mid-Atlantic to Chicago. It operates a transmission grid, which includes 62,556 miles of transmission lines and administers a competitive wholesale electricity market.
