Salem-based PCA Healthcare plans to join Carilion Clinic in June.
The move will add 17 physicians to Carilion’s staff. PCA operates four clinic locations in Salem, Floyd and Daleville and employs a total of 21 health-care providers.
“Carilion Clinic’s philosophical approach to medicine is where we see the future of our practice, especially as it relates to primary care,” Dr. Edwin (Ted) Polverino, president of PCA Healthcare, said in a statement. “That’s why we approached them in the first place.”
PCA said joining Carilion’s group of family practices will offer several benefits to PCA patients, including greater access to Carilion’s network of health-care providers.
Patients also will be able to take advantage of Carilion’s MyChart online patient portal, which allows them to access their medical records at any time and exchange secure messages with their primary care doctor and others on their health care team.
MyChart is also the basis of the patient-centered medical home model of primary care, which Carilion has practiced since 2011.
Carilion Clinic is a not-for-profit healthcare organization serving nearly 1 million people in Virginia through hospitals, outpatient specialty centers and advanced primary care practices.
