Falls Church-based Fortune 500 aerospace and defense contractor Northrop Grumman Corp. announced Wednesday it has promoted Scott Stapp as chief technology officer (CTO).

Stapp was most recently Northrop Grumman’s vice president of resiliency and rapid prototyping and has also previously served as vice president of applied research and technology development.

In his new role, he will work on new technology solutions for customers and strengthen the company’s existing programs. He will also have a hand in developing the company’s tech talent. He will report directly to Northrop Grumman Chairman, CEO and President Kathy Warden and will work with the company’s executive leadership team.

Before joining Northrop Grumman in 2014, Stapp worked with the Office of the U.S. Secretary of Defense, leading governance, acquisition and oversight on all DOD special access programs. He also served as the principal staff assistant to the undersecretary of defense, acquisition, technology and logistics.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wyoming, his master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of New Mexico and another master’s degree in national resource management from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

Northrop Grumman employs more than 90,000 people and reported $33.8 billion in 2019 revenue.
