The U.S. Air Force awarded Falls Church-based Northrop Grumman Corp. a potential five-year $3.6 billion contract for work on the branch’s airborne communications relay system, the Department of Defense announced Thursday.
Under the contract, Northrop Grumman will perform research, development, testing, evaluation, integration, operations and sustainment services for the branch’s Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN).
The BACN is designed to work with the Global Hawk unmanned aircraft system to help military operators collect data, according to Northrop Grumman. The company has not yet released further details about this contract.
“The Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) combined with Global Hawk, provides warfighters essential information to pursue and defeat the enemy,” according to Northrop Grumman.
The Air Force will obligate $23.7 million for the initial task order and contract work will take place in San Diego and overseas locations. Work is expected to be completed by Jan. 24, 2026.
