Va. coronavirus cases top 2,000

5:30 p.m. April 3 update: A woman in her 80s has died from COVID-19 related causes, the Chickahominy Health District reported Friday afternoon. She is the first fatality in this district, which covers Charles City, Goochland, Hanover and New Kent counties.

4:30 p.m. April 3 update: A 17th resident of Canterbury Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center has died from COVID-19, according to a news release from the center Friday afternoon. As stated Thursday in a Henrico County news conference, the long-term nursing facility had 92 patients who tested positive, as well as 25 staff members. All of Canterbury’s staff has been tested, but some test results are still outstanding, according to the news release. Fifty-three positive residents have not shown any symptoms, a number that has remained unchanged within the past 48 hours, the center said.

2:45 p.m. April 3 update: A woman in her 90s has died from causes related to COVID-19, according to a Henrico County Health Department spokesman. She was a resident at the Masonic Home in the county’s East End and is the first nursing home resident in the county to die from the virus, aside from the Canterbury Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Henrico’s West End, where 17 deaths have been recorded as of Friday afternoon.

Thursday evening at a Henrico County news conference, Dr. Danny Avula, director of the Henrico and Richmond health departments, said there are seven nursing homes in the county and the city experiencing clusters of COVID-19 cases.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Virginia is now 2,012, according to Friday’s update by the Virginia Department of Health. Forty-six people have died from causes related to the virus, 312 people are hospitalized, and 19,005 have been tested.

The United States has 245,601 positive cases, according to Johns Hopkins University’s most recent data, and the number of COVID-19 cases worldwide has topped 1 million, with 54,369 deaths recorded.

VDH updates its data daily at 9 a.m., including all cases and fatalities reported by local health districts before 5 p.m. the day before. Any information reported after 5 p.m. Thursday — or until 5 p.m. Friday — will be reflected at the Saturday update.
